The regular business of government continues – safety, streets, water, parks. These responsibilities matter, but for the first time since the polio epidemic, public health is forefront, and now more than almost any time in the last 40 years, social and racial equity also must be addressed by government. Leadership in the new normal asks for compassion, listening as much as doing and the ability to sincerely engage with residents, businesses and community organizations to build a collaborative vision for the future.
