Whoever you are – male or female, rich or poor – you’ve probably had a lot of experience with female leadership characteristics. Even if you’ve never worked in companies with women in leadership positions, your first boss was almost certainly a woman – your mom.

Make no mistake, motherhood is a leadership role. Once you’ve honed your leadership skills by convincing your rebellious teens to do their homework, leading adults is a cinch. Not all women choose to exercise their leadership qualities at work, but the home front is full of female leaders.

You don’t have far to look for reasons why moms are leaders. It’s because they have to be. Now, female leadership characteristics can present differently from what we generally think of as ‘leadership’. Your mother might be sweet and kind, and prefer to lead by example and gentle persuasion rather than domination, but she got you to do what you needed to do. Children don’t usually want to brush their teeth, eat their vegetables, or do all the things they need to grow up to be healthy adults. That’s why moms are leaders.

Leadership characteristics are evenly distributed throughout the population. Maybe many powerful women have only expressed their leadership qualities inside the family circle – up until now. The needs of the modern world call for both male and female leadership qualities. We can no longer afford to ignore a good leader just because she happens to be a woman.

If you’d like to learn about balanced leadership, a leadership style that gives equal value to female leadership characteristics, check out my website at Read my blog, where I talk more about why moms are leaders and how motherhood helped to train me for my leadership role.
